Neurodiversity is the broad spectrum of diversity across all human brains. It doesn’t relate to a specific group of people; it relates to all humans in the same way as hair colour.
Approximately one in five individuals are neurodivergent, these are the people that are significantly different from society’s idea of ‘normal’. Neurodivergent individuals often find nearly every aspect of life, and certainly life at work, harder than most people. Common challenges include the impact on their physical, mental and emotional energy, mental fatigue and loss of mental resilience, poor career progression and increased stress, which often lead to increased absence. When we meet the needs of neurodivergent individuals and create flexible work environments for them it allows them to move from their challenges into their strengths, increasing performance in the workplace and raising wellbeing and job satisfaction.
At our next free masterclass, open to anyone registered with the Social Enterprise Exchange programme, you’ll begin to develop a good awareness of neurodiversity, understand what it means to be neurodivergent, and start to identify what needs might be going unmet in your team. There’ll be an opportunity to consider the adjustments you might make in your organisation and the cultural behaviours you want to create so they become embedded in your enterprise.
This interactive but reflective session will be led by neurodiversity educator and consultant, Bea Marshall. Bea is an award-winning, articulate and thought-provoking, neurodivergent being who helps organisations embrace neurodiversity through training and consultancy. She also contributes to TV and radio as a parenting expert and is a former TEDx speaker.
The event will be held on the morning of Tuesday 20th June at the Burton Street Foundation in Hillsborough. The session will begin with breakfast and an opportunity to network with other social enterprises. There’ll be additional chances to network and to discuss your learning with others throughout the morning.
